No one’s ready for this
I understand (to a degree) how photo editing works. I also (to a even lesser degree) understand this for AI photo editing. But now Google, being the alleged arbitor of truth and knowledge has given society a tool that can effectively rewrite history if folks aren't paying attention. And we're really too tired too because we, as a society, are continuing to accept empty promises as policy notes.
The examples of the imagery shown is scary and yet to be expected in a piece like this. But it shows Google's disregard for launching such a product. The teams invovled will get promotions, down to the ICs and we'll see more instances of abuse via image editing rise. The need for markers of undoctored images will rise but it'll be a cat-and-mouse raise as anyone with enough drive will find a way to break through this.
This will now make me extremely distrustful of random imagery and I really don't like that. There's so much to be provided with the power of imagery (and also to be considered in its role of mobilizing people) and now we've been given a form of naplam to the whole space.
