Cory Doctrow on Elon Musk's 'Chaotic Blitz' at DOGE, Living in a Tech Dystopia, Luigi Mangione
Cory's interview with DemocracyNow came across my reader this morning and I was glad to hear someone speak on the internal class struggle of tech workers: especially software engineers. One only needs to look for a reference as to how technology under capitalist society works very marginally to improve the lives of the few who can afford it and cannibalize the labor of those who keep it up. In this case, he speaks to tech workers who are beginning to encourage the picking away of their own colleagues by way of AI.
I've clipped the part that more tech folks need to internalize and understand with their advertising of corporate AI:
He continues on tangible approaches of protest that workers can engage in. I have waning hope in tech workers wanting to engage in this due to the heavy internalized liberalism of workers as a whole. They find that the business of the company is more important than any sort of harm (perceived, actualized or otherwise) for the sake of soaring to the top of Hacker News or getting a blessing from some venture capitalist firm. One day, computers will be less important.
Watching that after watching an interview with Simon Willison on The Pragmatic Engineer that endorses the means of destabilization that's described above. Ardent folks for genAI will see this as a reach and I remind them to read anything by anyone who's written extensively about the harms that have come to pass and will continue to pass as this continues to roll around.
