Weeknotes for 10/15/2024

Books

I finished Black Software; a read that begins with a journey of some folks who worked to bring in Black faces into the burgeoning tech industry. It closes with a focus on how the American government pioneered its War on Crime by using its historically racist approach to policing to mechanize technology against the American public — specifically against non-white people. It focuses on Black people but I can see these technologies being used against poor people of any creed — to be poor is to be effectively Black by the edicts of American policy.

I'm currently finishing up Their Eyes Were Watching God, a timely read that's a mix of an adventure book and a series of romance happening right here in Florida. I'm extremely tempted to go visit some of these places mentioned in the book like Eatonville and the Everglades. Hurtson has a way with words that transport you right into the moment.

New Job

Today's my first day working at Coforma — a government IT company focused on providing services for the American public. This continues my career focus on working in the public sector and public-sector-adjacent places. I'm eager to talk more about what kind of work I'll be doing in the coming months.

I have to thank everyone who've helped me get to this point. I have a bigger plan to demonstrate my appreciation that requires a bit of time to pass first but I'm really thankful and excited to see where things will go from here.
