Weeknotes for 3/28/2025

I'm publishing this from Central Library in Brooklyn. After some time in San Francisco, I've landed here and have been enjoying the brisk but sunny nature of my hometown. I routinely feel sad about the speed of gentrification and tourist-centric warping of my neighborhoods of my youth but this is to be expected by a city that serves the class of folks making north of a quarter million dollars a year[1]. That aside, I really enjoy using the library as a co-working space. It's refreshing to take some time writing and working; peeking at a book on a shelf then taking a stroll by Prospect Park.

I missed last week's note mainly because of my time in San Francisco. I was focused on being aware which led to me doing things like watching a ballet performance of Frankenstein. It took some creative liberties from the source material from what I've been told but it didn't fail to fulfill its goal. I spent a lot of time reading — print and digital works but have been experiencing quite a bit of writers' block. I'm hoping to power through it by reading some more.

I wrote about what I'm doing with Livtet in my downtime. I'm working on another post about the (aggressive) use of SQL. It's been a while since I've been able to interface with it so tightly. The main reason is to allow for folks using the database outside of Livtet to work with more guardrails to prevent corruption. It's given me more appreciation for it as a portable database format and made me curious about what else I can push into the database itself.

  1. It's possible to struggle while making this much. It'd result from living in a way more expensive part of New York City, like Park Slope in Brooklyn, Midtown in Manhattan or LIC in Queens. Folks who choose to live and pay into the exorbitant cost have no sympathy from me, frankly, as each dollar spent into those commercial places pay into their existence. ↩︎
